For recumbent bikes the most common type of battery used is nickel cadmium. This type of battery has a fairly long lifespan and will only lose its ability to hold a charge over about two years. Low-end models will lose their charge capacity over time because the battery's electrolyte levels become depleted. Some cycling enthusiasts prefer to use a nickel-cadmium battery with its high power output for short distances. However, these bikes will also require frequent charging and may find that they are not suitable for long road trips.
