The ancient story churning of milk of ocean and appearance of goddess Lakshmiexplained


Mahalakshmi is goddess of fertility, fortune and wealth. She is wife of Lord Vishnu also known as Narayana who is the supreme god of sustenance and preservation. Lakshmi is considered as the embodiment of prosperity auspiciousness and Lakshmi wealth and therefore is known as “Shri” or “Kamala, Padma etc. has reference to her normal depiction as seated on a lotus with four hands. These hands are considered to represent four fundamental purposes of human life like Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, which are nothing but righteousness, wealth, worldly desiresand heaven respectively.Lakshmi and Narayana stay together as a single embodiment as they are inseparable and therefore is a single entity named Lakshmi Narayana. According to ancient scriptures, Lakshmi’s principal abode is the heart of Lord Vishnu. This is the reason behind the formation of the name Shrinivasa for Lord Vishnu, which means the place of residence of Shri, the goddess Lakshmi.
The wordLakshmiis considered to be derived from the expressions like Lakshya, Laksa etc. that means destination, goal, perception, successetc.that can be attained easily only if the Lakshmi wealthis given abundantly to a particular person.Thus, the name of the goddess is said to symbolize the purpose of existence. The Lakshmi wealth, which is given by goddess Lakshmi abundantly to her believers, can be considered as the very important thing needed for successful life on this earth. Other names like Padma.
According to ancient scriptures the goddess Lakshmi or the goddess of Lakshmi wealth emerged when the ancient ocean of milk was churned by the asuras and devas who are demons and gods respectively. Mount meru was the pole used for this churning. The rope used for this purpose according to legend was vasuki the serpent.
